Urban Archaeology

Course Description

This course will begin at the formation of the first cities in the Middle East, and move on the Polynesian chiefdoms in the South Pacific and the Viking presence and voyages across the North Atlantic. Historical sites from 18th and 19th century Europe, US and Africa will also be examined to trace continuity and change in the character of commercialization and urbanization through time.

Requirements

  1. Short ( 1 page) written summary of assigned reading to be handed out in class

  2. Five minute oral presentation of assigned reading

  3. Half hour presentation of group paper

  4. 25 page group paper

  5. Generate a series of questions from the weeks' assigned reading to put forth for discussion. Put these questions on paper and submit them to me at the end of class.

  6. Participation in the Viking Conference
