Zooarchaeology Lab

The Brooklyn College Zooarchaeology Laboratory

Room 538NE

The newly established Brooklyn Zooarchaeological Laboratory, provides a cutting edge research facility with state of the art bone sectioning equipment, reflected and transmitted light polarized microscope, extensive comparative collections on North Atlantic fish, sea mammal and terrestrial mammal bones. This facility benefits greatly from collaborative work with the Hunter College Bioarchaeology Laboratory, which provides expertise of over 20 years in research in this part of the world along with extensive collections of avian comparative skeleta. Both labs are part of the North Atlantic Biocultural Organization (NABO-Hunter coordinating center) and Northern Science and Education Center (NORSEC - Brooklyn coordinating center). This research and affiliation has made possible cooperation with Scandinavian, British and Canadian scholars in a cooperative use of historical, archaeological, zooarchaeological, paleobotanical and paleoentomological data to better understand the complex interplay of local and regional political structure, marine and terrestrial ecology, ethnic boundaries and changing climate in the North Atlantic region
