Photosynthesis is the light driven conversion of carbon dioxide and water to carbohydrate and oxygen.

In eucaryotic organisms the photosynthetic reactions occur in an organelle called the chloroplast. The many reactions that lead to the photosynthetic production of carbohydrates can be grouped into two categories: the light dependent and the light independent reactions. In the frame below an outline of photosynthesis is shown. More detailed information can be obtained by clicking on key words in the outline.
