In this reaction fructose-6-phosphate and ATP bind to the active site of the enzyme phosphofructokinase. The terminal phosphate of the ATP is transfered to the number one carbon of the fructose producing fructose-1,6-bisphosphate.
The enzyme phosphofructokinase is very important in the regulatio of ATP synthesis and in the rate of glycolysis.
