The work of a cell

Cells must carry out a wide variety of reactions.
In addition, they must control and coordinate these reactions so that the chance of survial of the organism is maximized.

The reaction can be anabolic (putting things together) such as combining water and carbon dioxide to for carbonic acid which is catalyzed by the enzyme carbonic anhydrase.

They can the catabolic (breaking things apart) such as the cleavage of the alpha 1,2 glycosidic bond of sucrose to yield glucose and fructose.

The reactions can facilitate the transport of molecules across the plasma membrane such as the glucose permease does.

The reactions can involve the movement of molecules, vesicles or organelles

Whatever the kind of reaction, enzymes act to increase the rate at which these reactions occur.
