Premed/Prehealth Resources

If He Can Do It, You Can Too!

Like many Brooklyn College students, Edgar Ordaz is a first generation college student.  His parents are immigrant, migrant workers with only high school levels of education.  Edgar decided to pursue medicine because he wants to give back - he vividly remembers waiting on line at free health clinics when he was growing up, the only way his family could get any health care.

When Edgar starts community college, he is lost.  He has no science background whatsoever and is at an 8th grade level in math.  But Edgar is now a successful premed student at California State University.  He has a series of videos on Utube that chronicle his journey.  Edgar’s videos are full of insights about what to do to be successful - things he learned along the way that his background didn’t prepare him for.

Medical Pathway Program

Started in 2009, the Medical Pathway Program (MPP) is an intensive preparatory boot camp that helps disadvantaged and minority students increase their competitiveness for entry into medical school. The multi-dimensional, 20-week Saturday-based program (12-week summer program) adds needed diversity to medical schools and the medical profession. As part of the program, MIM provides training in seven broad areas: academic enrichment; MCAT/medical school preparation; leadership development; clinical exposure; civic engagement, mentoring and parent training. Attend in person or via skype. Learn more at: http://medicalmentor.org/our-programs/
