Research Interests:  We are a synthetic organic research group and are currently interested in the field of organocatalysis, the use of organic compounds as reaction catalysts. Whereas transition metal catalysts are superior in terms of their efficiency and versatility, organocatalysts can be safer to people and to the environment, less expensive, and easier for scientists to handle. The goal of our research is to enhance the utility of organocatalysis in organic synthesis.  Specifically, we aim to:  1) develop new transition metal-free catalysts for organic reactions, 2) develop new organocatalytic reactions, and 3) synthesize small bioactive molecules using new organocatalysts and/or new organocatalytic reactions.
