Rome 18 BCE
TYPE: Slow quadriga and basket-like car with three ears of grain
LEGEND: CAESAR AVGVSTVS S(enatus) C(onsulto)
Among Augustus' many public benefactions were several provisions of grain (see Res Gestae 15). More important than the specific instances of benefaction, however, was the projection of the Principate as a time of prosperity and the Princeps as providing the stability, peace, and conquest of Egypt that assured a steady supply of food for the city.
