Ingres, Vergil Reciting from the Aeneid, 1812

The French painter, Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres (born 1780), painted a scene of Virgil reading Book VI to Augustus. When he read the ending, about the untimely death of Marcellus (Augustus' nephew and designated heir), he depicted Octavia collapsing, while Livia (wife of Augustus) and Augustus himself (and the two courtiers behind him) register varying emotions.
