Core Studies 1 S: Course Requirements

This section of Core 1 would normally meet twice a week: Tuesdays and Thursdays, 3:15 to 4:30, in room 3117 Boylan. During most of the semester we will not meet on Thursday. Instead, we will discuss various topics in cyberspace. But there WILL be class meetings on the following Thursdays: Sept. 3, Sept. 24, and Oct. 29.

Note that you are required to attend ALL the regular class meetings. This is especially important since there are fewer of them. If you miss more than two classes without a valid excuse, your grade will be lowered. It's just as important that you log on to the course web site SEVERAL TIMES A WEEK to keep up with group discussions and to add your own contributions.

The two papers will count a total of 25%; the mid-term test will count 25%; and the cumulative final exam will count 25%. The remaining 25% of your grade will be based on your contribution to our ongoing discussions throughout the semester, both in class and on the web.

No late papers will be accepted. You may re-write papers to earn a higher grade. The original paper must be turned in with all re-writes.

My office hours are Tuesday and Thursday, 12:45-1:30 p.m. and Friday, 10-11 a.m. in 2407 Boylan. My office telephone is 951-5814. You can reach the Classics Department at 951-5191.

You may e-mail me with any questions at any time. My address is: hahbc@cunyvm.cuny.edu.

Core Studies 1 S: On-Line Class Discussion

This section of Core Studies 1 is part of an experiment in distance learning. Classroom discussion will not end when the 75 minutes are up. We will continue our discussions and focus them by posting comments and questions in an electronic forum which will be available to everyone in the class, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

To access this forum go to the College's Caucus Center and log in. Then click to see the list of all available conferences and join the "Hansen2" conference. Note: If you are registered in this section you can log in, choose a username and password, and become a full member of the conference, where you can post comments and questions at any time. If you are not registered in this section, you may still join our Caucus conference, but you will have "read-only" privileges.

If you are thinking of taking a virtual section of Core 1 in spring 1999, feel free to have a look at what we are doing this semester.

When you join Caucus, you will be asked to provide some information about yourself. You may provide as much or as little information as you wish, but you MUST give your full name so that everyone will be able to tell who is posting what.

We are going to have a new kind of discussion! In an on-line conference everyone can participate at their own pace, and at a time of their own choosing. If you thought of a great comment after class was over--or maybe you almost raised your hand but didn't, or you raised your hand and I didn't see you--there is no such problem here. What's more, it's easy to review what others have said already, so that you can build on it and move the discussion forward.
