Every student registered for at least one course for credit in a degree program is automatically issued a student e-mail account. All students should have received a letter indicating their personal e-mail address. If you did not receive or have lost your letter, you may obtain your e-mail address either in person or via the Internet. To obtain your e-mail address you must have your Social Security number and PIN code ready.

In Person: Students who wish to obtain their e-mail address in person should visit the Atrium Student Lab (1306 Plaza Building) or call (718) 951-5787.

Via the Web: To obtain your e-mail address via the web, you will need Internet access (on-campus or from home) and must use one of the following browsers: Netscape 3.0 + or MIE 3.02+. Please follow the steps below:

3. Step by Step Instructions: Using A POP Mail Program to Access Your BC Mail Account

(Not necessary if you are happy with the way of getting email described in step 2)

You can also access your BC Email account from most standard email programs if you have a PPP (or direct) internet connection (you have one, for instance, if you have AOL). The set up instructions vary, but basically you have to enter some information in the email programs "options" "account" or "preferences" menus.

You can configure most POP mail clients to retrieve and send e-mail from your BC account. To do this you will need:

E-mail programs vary from product to product, but they all need basically the same information to access your BC e-mail account. From within Netscape (Edit/Preferences/Mail); Microsoft Internet Explorer Mail (Mail/Options/Server); or Eudora (Tools/Options/Getting Started) you can set the mail client to retrieve and send mail. Refer to the instructions provided with the software for specific information, but here is a sample:

Using Microsoft Internet Mail as an example, assume your e-mail address is:
student@bcmail.brooklyn.cuny.edu

The first time you run Microsoft Internet Explorer Mail (or most mail programs), it will ask you a series of questions to set up your mail account. If you already have Internet Mail running, and want to change settings to access your BC mail account, then select "Mail" from the menu bar - then select "Options" - then the "Server" tab. In either case, the following information must be entered:

Under Name/Organization/E-mail Address:
Put your full name; school (optional) and your return e-mail address
(for example: student@bcmail.brooklyn.cuny.edu)

Under Outgoing mail/SMTP Server list:
Enter your ISP's SMTP Address

Under Incoming mail/POP3 Server list:
<mail server>.brooklyn.cuny.edu

In this case you would enter the name of the mail server you were given when you got your e-mail account. For example, if your e-mail address is on mail server bcmail02, then you would enter the following under incoming mail: bcmail02.brooklyn.cuny.edu

Under POP3 Account Name list:
Exchange Domain/Your E-mail ID (in this case BCACAD/student)

You can enter your password (student ID with no dashes or spaces) or leave it out. For security reasons, it is better to leave it out. Your computer will then prompt you for the password whenever you log in to receive mail.

Note: On all mail programs you will see an option to "leave messages on server". If you are working from a public terminal (such as in the Library), you should select this option. By leaving your messages on the server, they will not be deleted from your account. If you are working from home, you may wish to remove the messages from the server. The program will automatically copy your messages locally to your computer (where you can view them) to save disk space.
