Dong quai is used for the treatment of almost every female gynecological ailment. It is particularly useful for the treatment of menstrual cramps, irregularity, delayed flow and weakness during the menstrual period. It is also used to moisten the intestines to treat constipation.

Don quai, is also known as tang kwei, should not be used during pregnancy, or with excessive mensttrual flow.

The Western herb angelica, Angelica archangelica, can be subtituted in some cases. However, its action is harsher and it is a stimulant that reduces cramping through its warming quality, while dong quai accomplishes this through its antispasmodic components. Both are useful blood purifiers.
