Introduction to Economic and Business Statistics Fall, 1999 Required Text: M.L. Berenson and D.M. Levine, Business Statistics: A First Course, Prentice Hall, 1998. The objective of this course is to provide students with an understanding of randomness, its sources and significance. Topics covered in this course will include descriptive statistics, regression analysis, forecasting, probability distributions, estimation and hypothesis testing. As a study aid, you may use the chapter numbers in the following schedule, which are hyperlinks to a lecture notes for each chapter. Each subject in the schedule is a hyperlink to an review quiz, which will be available from Thursday following class until the following Tuesday. The quizzes will constitute 10% of the final grade. Eight projects will be assigned to teams of 3-4 students. Each project will involve data analysis, the preparation of a brief (1-2 page) memo describing the results of the analysis and making recommendations to management, and a 5-10 minute oral presentation. During the course of the semester each team member will make at least two oral presentations. The projects, which will be due the beginning of the second week after they are assigned, will constitute 40% of the final grade. Late or illegible assignments or reports will not be accepted. The midterm (on chapters 1-5) and final exam (on chapters 6-11
and any additional topics covered) will each constitute 25% of the final
grade.
