AltaVista Translations.
      Write in one language and be automatically translated into another. English to French, Italian, German, Portugues, Spanish; French, German, Italian, Russian, Portuguese, and Spanish to English. Be advised: the translation doesn't alwlays make sense because words are translated literally, not idiomatically.

Bartlett's Quotations.
      Ninth edition (1901) with a link to the tenth edition (1919). A collection of over 11,000 passages, phrases, and proverbs traced to their literary sources. Search engine. editors bring you the best websites, leading magazines, related books, and the complete Encyclopędia Britannica. Includes today's news, the Merriam-Webster dictionary, and a search engine.

Your Own Online Dictionary

      A great site if this company every gets its act together. I saw a demonstration at PC Expo and was impressed. BUt it's not up and working yet. I'll keep you advised.
      Once you download the udefine software, you can click on any word in a Web page you are reading and get the dictionary definition, audio pronunciation, usage, history, even translations of the word in six languages, as well as relevant audio/video clips and relevant Internet links. Go to the site and download the software.

Internet Public Library.
      The Literary Criticism Collection contains 1,367 critical and biographical Websites on authors and their works. The Reference Center (e.g., almanacs,census data, dictionaries, encyclopedias), Arts and Humanities, Business and Economics, Computers and Internet, Health and Medical Sciences, Law, Government and Politcial Science, Social Sciences. The serials or magazine collection contains over 3000 titles that can be searched or browsed by subject or by title. Newspapers from all over the world. Special sections for children and teens.

      One of the foremost research libraries in the US. Exhibits, catalogues, search engine. Copyright office: forms and information. Emphasis on American history.
