The student papers, which illustrate
the writing
assignments in English 40.4, will, I hope, be helpful. When I was a student,
I found it easier to write a paper,
write lab reports, answer essay questions, etc. if I read examples;
I then had a guide to ways the assignment could be fulfilled and
had a better idea of what the professor expected and liked.
Most of the following essays were written for a
Nineteenth Century Novel course. However, I have included some
written for other courses, for several reasons: (1) they are effectively
thought out and written, (2) at least some of you will have read
these works or writers, and (3) in the case of the essays of personal
response and of social analysis, the essays are understandable
even if you haven't read the particular novel or poem referred
to.
Enjoy reading the essays--I certainly did.
Note:
The names of the writers who gave me persmision
to use their names are included.
The name of the work is included it if is
not self evident from the title or if it is a work not included
in this course.
