Course Description:
Bulletin description: 
Essentials of the structure and nature of the English language. A systematic study of English grammar: the elements and processes of the sound system, the system of grammatical markers, the syntax and the semantic systems of English. 3 hours; 3 credits.  Pre-requisite: Eng 1010

 Course requirements:

1.      You are allowed 2 absences. Two latenesses=1 absence. Any additional absences will affect your final grade.

2.      All work is due when assigned.  If you are absent, be sure to get the assignment from a classmate or consult the class website.

3.  There will be frequent quizzes (at least 2/week), a midterm, and a final exam.

 

Course objectives:
At the end of this course, students should be able to:

o   understand the structure of the English language, including aspects of syntax, phonology, and semantics

o   understand, analyze and diagram complex sentences

·       understand and sharpen reading and writing skills through an awareness of the grammar used every day in speech and in writing

·       appreciate the interrelation of language, culture, and society

                              I.  Identify nouns, verbs, adjective, adverbs, prepositional phrases in 20 sentences.

                            II.  Identify the prepositional phrases as adverbial or adjectival.
                           III.  Identify the sentence pattern.
                            IV.  Identify verb tenses.
                              V. Diagram 10 of the 20 sentences in part I.
                             VI. Change sentences from active to passive, and identify their tenses.
