Structure of Modern English
Course requirements:
1.
You are allowed 1
absence. Two latenesses=1 absence. Any additional
absences will affect your final grade.
2.
All work is due when
assigned. If you are absent, be sure to get the assignment from a
classmate or consult the class website.
3. There
will be frequent quizzes (at least 2/week), a midterm, and a final exam.
Course objectives:
At the end of this course, students should be able to:
o understand the structure of the English
language, including aspects of syntax, phonology, and semantics
o understand, analyze and diagram complex
sentences
· understand and sharpen reading and writing
skills through an awareness of the grammar used every day in speech and in
writing
· appreciate the interrelation of language,
culture, and society

HW for Wednesday (we will spend
the first 30 minutes of class reviewing this homework on passive voice and
tenses):
For the midterm: I. Identify nouns, verbs, adjective,
adverbs, prepositional phrases in 20 sentences.
III. In 10 of the 20 sentences in part I, identify the sentence
pattern.
IV. In 5 of the 20 sentences, and in all 5 of the sentences in part
VI, identify the tense of the verb.
V. Diagram 10 of the 20 sentences in part I.
VI. Change 5 sentences from active to passive, and identify the tense in
each of the 5 sentences (this is what we will review in the first half hour
Wednesday evening).
