Structure of Modern English

 Course requirements:

1.      You are allowed 1 absence. Two latenesses=1 absence. Any additional absences will affect your final grade.

2.      All work is due when assigned.  If you are absent, be sure to get the assignment from a classmate or consult the class website.

3.  There will be frequent quizzes (at least 2/week), a midterm, and a final exam.

 

Course objectives:
At the end of this course, students should be able to:

o   understand the structure of the English language, including aspects of syntax, phonology, and semantics

o   understand, analyze and diagram complex sentences

·       understand and sharpen reading and writing skills through an awareness of the grammar used every day in speech and in writing

·       appreciate the interrelation of language, culture, and society

Course materials and texts:
Two course packets available at Far Better Copy (corner of Hillel Pl and Campus Rd).
Additional materials will be distributed in class.

Final:               35%

Tentative schedule: class meets Tuesdays and Wednesdays, 6-7:30PM.

Week 1: Packet, chap 1-3, p. 1-25;
Week 2: Packet, chap 3-4, p.25-35
Week 3: Packet, chap 4-5, p. 36-44
Midterm (Wednesday, June 21, covering chapters 1-4)
Week 4 and 5: Packet, chap 6-8, p. 45-78

Final exam: Tuesday, July 11 (covering chapters 1-8)

HW for Wednesday (we will spend the first 30 minutes of class reviewing this homework on passive voice and tenses):

   Packet I: p. 38-39, Ex 14;  Packet 2: p. 14-15, Ex. 5.1
For the midterm:  I.  Identify nouns, verbs, adjective, adverbs, prepositional phrases in 20 sentences.

                            II.  In 5 designated sentences, label the prepositional phrases as adverbial or adjectival.
                           III.  In 10 of the 20 sentences in part I, identify the sentence pattern.
                            IV.  In 5 of the 20 sentences, and in all 5 of the sentences in part VI, identify the tense of the verb.
                              V. Diagram 10 of the 20 sentences in part I.
                             VI. Change 5 sentences from active to passive, and identify the tense in each of the 5 sentences (this is what we will review in the first half hour Wednesday evening).
