This course is an introduction to dramatic literature. We will explore questions about the nature of the theater through reading plays that self-consciously examine their own theatrical status, through the device of a play-within-the-play or through other means of reflecting on theatricality. Readings will include Aristophanes' Acharnians and Thesmophoriazusae, Shakespeare's Midsummer Night's Dream and Hamlet, Kyd's The Spanish Tragedy, Brecht's Galileo, Pirandello's Six Characters in Search of an Author. Stoppard's Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead, and Frayn's Noises Off. Assignments will include close reading exercises, staging exercises, essays, and exams.
