Sun, Mar 07, 2004 -- Caryl Phillips at BC
Caryl Phillips will be speaking on Tuesday, March 16 at 7:00 p.m. in the State Lounge in SUBO. I am hoping that we can all go to hear him speak in lieu of our regular class session that evening. Since we will have finished reading Crossing the River, some of us might have a few questions for him. I think this is really a wonderful opportunity that we cannot afford to miss.

Also, I here is a link to a Caryl Phillips site on:

http://www.carylphillips.com/files/indexb2.html

It is a very useful site, which includes articles about Phillips' work, like "The Struggle of Postmodernism and Postcolonialism in Caryl Phillips's Crossing the River" by Gilbert Mc Innis, as well as essays by Phillips himself, like "A beacon in dark times," an essay about the ironies of the Statue of Liberty and Emma Lazarus' poem, "The New Colossus," in the context of post 9-11 America and the hastily passed Patriot Act.

Having read "Crossing the River" and the "The Mystic Masseur," it seems curious that the author of the former wrote the screenplay for the movie version of the latter. This site is from The New York State Writers' Institute
