EXPERIENCE SUMMARY

I am an Environmental Geologist with experience in hazardous site characterization, designing sampling programs, implementing soil and groundwater sampling programs, preparing remediation studies. My experience also ranges in the environmental health and safety compliance field since I have worked in different aspects of this field. First as an environmental geologist I have developed health and safety plans to be implemented at work sites. For the past three years to today I have been part of a team that successfully passed an internal audit for an EPA college wide inspection.

I had participated in remedial investigation/feasibility studies, hazardous site investigations, remediation studies and analysis of hazardous site remediation programs on urban concentrations. I had prepared sampling plans for the analysis of heavy metals on eleven contaminated sites in Hudson County. I had conducted site characterization studies based on historical land use activity and field reconnaissance.

I was involved in research of remediation of sites contaminated with hazardous waste and heavy metals using the "heap-leaching" method. During this time I had collaborated in developing a methodology for the collection of contaminants and wastewater.

I had also worked as a consultant in studies of vibration produced by construction (pile

and sheeting driving) on the construction of the base of the Air Train, that will connect Jamaica subway station with the Kennedy Airport in NYC. I had also done ambient vibration studies analysis and their impact on computer equipment and aquatic life.

My undergraduate work includes research study for R.O.M.A.S. (Research of Marine and

Estuary Studies) in the erosion control methods of the Easter Long Island Coast and its effects on the urban environment. At the graduate level I have three years of experience working in soil/clay pore interactions with heavy metals. My experience includes thesis research of trivalent and hexavalent chromium interactions with different types of clays at various concentrations, temperatures and pH levels. My research also included the use of an X-ray diffraction machine, an atomic absorption, an electron scanning microscope, a transmission electron microscope and a spectrophotometer. I developed a petrographic thin sectioning laboratory with all the elements necessary to produce good quality thin sections.

I teach and I have taught geology, earth science and environmental sciences courses, all of

these courses have a heavy laboratory component. Also taught a class called the use of computers in science and freshman and core laboratories at the City College of New York and at Kingsborough Community College. At Brooklyn College I taught many Earth Science classes for teachers that are trying to obtain their licenses in Earth Science to teach for the Board of Education of New York City.

At the present time at Brooklyn College, I supervise and teach the proper use and

operation of a scanning electron microscope, an atomic absorption machine, a spectrophotometer, a gas chromatographer and a thin section prep laboratory.  In addition, I make sure that our department complies with all the safety requirements and requirements given by the City University of New York, NYDEP, EPA and the NYFD. I catalog, handle and store all types of chemicals and I oversee their proper disposal, tracking, and manifest record keeping. I am in charge of compliance of all the safety regulations regarding use and storage of chemicals and radioactive elements.

I am part of the radiation safety committee and for the past three years also a part of the EPA/NYDEP compliance committee, in charge of making sure that all the departments in the college are in compliance to pass the college wide inspection. We have successfully passed this inspection with 12 minor violations that were corrected on the spot.

My computer experience ranges from using the entire Microsoft Office suite to a wide array of statistics and data management programs. I have developed and maintained the web pages related to teaching geology, earth science, and science in general. I have worked with three other faculties in the development of teaching geology on the web.
