ORIGIN OF LANDFORMS
- INTRODUCTION -
WHAT ARE LANDFORMS? Landforms are the natural features of the earth's surface. Here are some examples:
  • VERY LARGE: continents, ocean basins
  • LARGE: whole mountain ranges, vast plains and plateaus.
  • INTERMEDIATE: individual mountains, hills, valleys.
  • SMALL: hillside slopes, river banks, dunes.
  • VERY SMALL: boulders, grooves and scratches on rocks.
THE AIMS OF THE INVESTIGATION:
  • To understand the nature of evidence in geology.
  • To understand how geologists draw conclusions.
  • To investigate the origin of hills and valleys that characterize the New York City region and, in doing so, to provide explanations for the origin of some smaller landforms.
Preview three common hypotheses of how hills and valleys form by clicking on the buttons.
Differential Erosion.
Differential Deposition.
Uplift and Depression.
Now more fully explore and test each of these hypotheses. Go back to the NYC Home Page and click on "Testing Hypotheses".
