We meet at Columbus Circle, at the southwest corner of Central Park, at the base of the monument capped by gold statuary.
The monument is dedicated to the 260 men killed when the US battleship Maine was destroyed by an explosion in Havana Harbor on Feb. 15, 1898. The destruction of the Maine helped precipitate the Spanish-American war, although the cause of the explosion was never satisfactorily explained.
