OUTCOMES: To achieve the goals and objectives of the course, students will perform five 'linked' investigations. Upon successful completion of these investigations, students can do the following:
1. THE WORLD OF MINERALS:
Determine properties of minerals and, by referring to classification charts, identify six unknown minerals.
Identify and properly describe the major landforms of the NYC region.
3.THE FOURTH DIMENSION:
Come to conclusions about Earth History. This is accomplished by: Drawing conclusions about how rocks form. Determining how many years ago rock-forming processes and other past events took place. Acomplished by examining contour maps and comparing the actual landforms of the NYC region to an array of described landforms. Determine the distribution of geologic materials in the NYC region. This is accomplished by comparing the actual distribution of materials to a series of proposed distributions presented in the form of 'geologic maps'.
4. PLATE TECTONICS
Learn about the application of the scientific method by using a the hypothesis of Continental Drift. Learn about the interactions of different plates and how those plates create volcanoes and earthquakes. Study how scientists determine plate movements and the epicenter of an earthquake.
5. THE FOURTH DIMENSION: Come to conclusions about Earth History. This is accomplished by: Drawing conclusions about how rocks form. Determining how many years ago rock-forming processes and other past events took place.
The following labs are considered alternate labs and they might not be used every term.
6. THE LANDFORMS OF NYC: Determine the origin of the major landforms of the NYC region. For each landform, this is accomplished by: Establishing an appropriate procedure and then using that procedure to test and compare three proposed modes of origin. Performing the tests requires drawing upon information and skills acquired in the 'Minerals' and 'Maps' investigations. Using knowledge of geologic processes that shape landforms to determine whether or not these processes operated in the past in the NYC region to create the landforms seen today.
7. THE DROWNING OF NEW YORK:
Judge how to react to the claim of Global Warming. This accomplished by
Forming an opinion as to the likelihood of Global Warming.
Determining possible side-effects of climate change, particularly whether a rise in sea level will take place that may drown significant portions of the NYC region.
Deciding, in the face of such claims what, if anything, should or can be done to avert catastrophe.
