LOU AND LULU SHARPEN THEIR QUESTIONS & MASTER BASIC FACTS
"Drowning of New York, storm surges, hurricane categories, sea level rise, global warming!!! All this sounds pretty scary! And mysterious!! I wonder what all these things mean and what they have to do with each other??!!?"
"You're right Lou! They are scary! And there's a lot we don't know! I guess to properly evaluate the hypothesis that 'New York's gonna drown' we need to ask some right questions and get some right answers!"
"So what is it we want to know?!"
"I think we need to know three things in order to evaluate danger from flooding...!"
  • What will be the magnitude (elevation) of the flood? That is, how high will the water rise?

  • What is the elevation of the land? After all, any land that is higher than the elevation of the flood won't be affected!

  • How often will serious floods occur? If a flood that can cover most of the city happens on average only once every thousand years, then the chances of its happening in my lifetime are rather small - and I've got other things to worry about!

"All right! Now I know what a category 5 hurricane is! N.E.T. said their map shows what would happen to the Big Apple if a storm surge associated with a category 5 hurricane were to hit! And the New York Post and NYPIRG maps look similar to the N.E.T. map! I wonder how often New York can expect a category 5 hurricane! "

"I wonder why the N.E.T map (and maybe the other maps too) are based on a category 5 hurricane? It doesn't sound like they would produce frequent inundations!!"
"Yeh, hmmnn!! Something seems wrong there! But maybe global warming and its effect on sea level play a part in drowning the Big Apple!"
