Course Goal

·                    To clarify the role of the health counselor

·                    To demonstrate the application of basic counseling skills to the solution of health problems

 

 

Course Objectives:

At the end of this course, students will be able to:

 

§                     Demonstrate the application of basic counseling techniques to the solution of health problems

§                     Describe the role of the counselor from a public and mental health perspective

§                     Contrast the basic elements of schools of counseling and theories of health behavior change

§                     Explain the role of culture in health counseling

§                     Describe technique of individual and cultural assessment

§                     Assess factors that contribute to successful counseling outcomes

§                     Outline health counseling practices in relation to diverse diseases, syndromes, and behavioral disorders

§                     Outline the applications of health counseling to special populations

§                     Describe ethical considerations for health counselors

§                     Demonstrate skill in the use of information technology to disseminate counseling issues
