ESSAY 1
Up

DUE: April 1

This mid-term essay  builds on the work you have done in the first two assignments. You have already chosen several primary sources that illustrate the context and development of the revolutionary movement in America.

Write a proposal (four to five pages, typed, double-spaced) describing a film script on the revolutionary movement from the early 1760s to 1775. You should make clear  the thesis that will give the film coherence. Draw on the sources you have chosen, explaining how they would be used to advance your thesis. You may use sources from the packet, those on-line listed in the syllabus, or other on-line sources you find on the world wide web. Suggest which of the characters in Bailyn,  Skemp, or Cook  would be the best biographical focus for the film. Use Cook  for narrative background and events. This is NOT a script but a descriptive proposal that will give a critical discussion of sources and issues, placing the revolutionary movement within the context of Georgian America.

Notice the words in bold script. They are a guide to what I expect in the essay. Also don't forget to consult the following guides:

You may find other useful aids on the References page.

I suggest a paper of between 1000 and 1500 words (4-6 typed double-spaced pages). As with any academic writing, be sure to provide footnotes or endnotes for any quotations you use or to cite works you use.

BE SURE TO USE A COVER SHEET THAT HAS YOUR NAME AND A TITLE THAT POINTS TO THE THESIS.

ALTERNATIVE FORMAT

For students who are skittish about writing a script proposal, you may instead write a regular essay on the American revolutionary movement from the early 1760s to the beginning of war in 1775 by discussing the following assertion critically: "There was nothing inevitable about the American Revolution, It did not need to happen, and . . . the best-informed people thought it could be deflected."

This format does not change the basic tasks of the assignment - a well formulated thesis, the skillful use of primary sources, and the use of at least one person from Skemp or Bailyn to advance your thesis. As in the script proposal version you should be sure to give a critical discussion of sources and issues, placing the revolutionary movement within the context of Georgian America.
