VIRTUAL 1

ASSIGNMENTS VIRTUAL CLASSES PART II PART III The 20th NOTES

Virtual Session 1

KINGS & DESPERATE MEN:
AN INTERVIEW WITH JEAN DOMAT & JOHN LOCKE

This first virtual session continues our study of Dynastic States, the topic for Lecture III.  Last week's online workshop in Caucus (item 2) got you started looking carefully at a primary source, Jean Domat's essay on absolute monarchy. Review those postings. Those of you who participated in the workshop have already used chapter 24 of the textbook. Everyone now should dig into that chapter. (Try out the note taking suggestions on the Study Aids page. ) Also take a good look at the Lecture III online notes. They provide links to more information you may find useful in the following assignment. In particular look for events, people, topics, and issues on the history of France and England in the early modern period.

TASK: You are staging an interview of Jean Domat and John Locke for a documentary film. You
want the characters to explain and defend their views on monarchy and social order. Use
the two documents in the SB and the TB and lecture materials to present their major points and views in historical context.

1. To prepare for the interview read and make notes on the Source Book selections from their writings. Consult the Use of Primary Sources guide as you prepare the materials. Also note the sections of the Textbook and Lecture III that provide background. (Can you find other Web sites that might provide  background on these men and their times?) Be able to describe briefly their historical contexts.

2. In the Caucus Forum item for Virtual Session 1, present their views on the connection between monarchy and social order. Give them a chance to comment on each other's ideas. Be sure to illustrate their similarities and their differences, having them explain how French and English history shaped their ideas.

REMEMBER: Make your first posting by Friday night. Before next Tuesday's class be sure to read all the other posts and then in your second posting, comment on how you agree or disagree with some of the other interview presentations.  Or add some other ideas of your own.
