Democracy or Dictatorship?
The Twentieth-Century Nation State

Democracy or Dictatorship?  That was the question nation states faced in the first half of the twentieth century.  For this virtual session we consider the following questions:

  1. What seemed to be the failures of the western democracies between the two world wars?

  2. What was Fascism and its appeal in Italy and Germany?

  3. How do Fascism in Germany and Stalinism in the USSR  compare?

Write a brief statement dealing with the first two questions to explain the rise of totalitarianism during the interwar years.

Then concentrate on question 3: suggest some events, sources, and images that might be used for a documentary comparing the two totalitarian systems. You may, of course,  use SB documents,  but I'd be particularly pleased if you found other material on the Web.
