Democracy or Dictatorship?
The Twentieth-Century Nation State
Democracy or Dictatorship? That was the question
nation states faced in the first half of the twentieth century. For this
virtual session we consider the following questions:

What seemed to be the failures of the western
democracies between the two world wars?

What was Fascism and its appeal in Italy and Germany?
-
How do Fascism in Germany and Stalinism in the
USSR compare?
Write a brief statement dealing with the first two
questions to
explain the rise of totalitarianism during the interwar years.
Then concentrate on question 3: suggest some events, sources,
and images that might be used for a documentary comparing the two totalitarian
systems. You may, of course, use SB documents, but I'd be
particularly pleased if you found other material on the Web.
