MODERNIZATION 2: INDUSTRIAL REVOLUTION
This virtual session continues our work for the
19th-Century Modernization Documentary film project. This installment
will deal with the Industrial Revolution. Some of your time should be
spent working with the Lecture
VIII notes and the TB chapters 31 and 32 (884-891). Find materials on how the Industrial
Revolution was part of the process of modernization in the 19th century.
The posting will
deal with a part of the film that presents two views of the Industrial
Revolution, one by Adam Smith and the other by Karl Marx. We need
materials to put those thinkers into context and to illustrate how they
view industrialization.
For your first post (Try to make it by Saturday):
1. List four events (make sure they are specific events, NOT topics) that you see as most
significant for understanding the Industrial Revolution and its effects; explain your choices.
2. Suggest passages from at least two documents that illustrate positive and negative
effects of industrialization. Also select at least one image for the
documentary. (Check
the course image
collection for Industry & Society. If you can find other images on the Web so much the
better. Be sure to post the URL.) Use one of your documentary quotes as a caption for
the image.
For your SECOND POST (before Tuesday's class) discuss briefly how these
materials provide background for understanding the views of Smith and
Marx on economic and social modernization. Suggest passages from both
documents that spotlight their agreements and disagreement. Comment
on some of your colleague's suggestions.
