VIRTUAL SESSION VII,
March 27
MODERNIZATION 3: Modern Culture & Modern Outlook
The third part of our documentary film on the 19th
century will deal with modern culture and the development of a
distinctly modern point of view. This part of the film will try to
explain and illustrate "the modern
outlook" as it developed in the
western world during the 19th century revolutions of
modernization. A person's outlook on the world
is a product of his or her consciousness. The dictionary defines
consciousness this way: "A sense of personal or group identity,
especially the combination of beliefs, attitudes, and values held by or
considered characteristic of an individual or a group. " We need
events, names, images, documentary sources, and web sites
that show how changes in 19th-century western culture shaped a modern
perspective.
For this virtual session:
 |
Since the textbook
doesn't have a section dealing with 19th-century cultural history,
much of your virtual session will be spent working through the notes for Lecture IX. Spend
time browsing some of the links I've provided in the lecture notes.
|
Because using the online lecture is a
major part of this session, there is only one posting; but I hope many of you
will also post some reactions to what others have suggested for the film as
well. For you posting:
 | Describe briefly what you think are the main characteristics of
"the modern outlook" [Be sure to
refer to the introductory material in Lecture IX. Can
you explain in your own words what those quotations mean?]
Then write a sentence that might be used to introduce the film, an
opening statement for the narrator to read.
|
 | Give some examples of people and events
the film might use, explaining your choices briefly. Whom
would you choose as the most important thinker for shaping modern
culture in the 19th century? Try to convince us of your choice.
|
 | Choose a passage from a document and an
image to illustrate important issues or topics in 19th-century
culture. How would you use those selections in the film? For
example, explain how a painting might be used as a source for
understanding urban life.

BE SURE YOUR MAJOR POSTING IS
DONE BY MONDAY MORNING, MARCH 31.
