VIRTUAL SESSION VIII: April 3
MODERNIZATION  AND WESTERN POWER

Continuing our work on the 19th-century modernization film, in this session we look at the expansion of western imperialism as a focus for the three modernizing forces we've studied the last three sessions. First, read TB chapter 34 and the online notes for Lecture X. Then let's start by examining some documents.

bullet

Choose any two of the following SB documents you think might be most useful for understanding issues in western expansion and imperialism.
bullet

How do they relate to the three 19th-century movements that shaped the modern west (nationalism and the nation state; industrial revolution and its social and economic effects; and the ideas and values of modern culture)?

bullet

How would you use these documents to discuss the connection between western imperialism and modernization?

bullet

For your first posting tell us which two you choose and why. Supply some quoted passages that might be used in the film, explaining their significance.
