VIRTUAL SESSIONS IX, May 1, 8
THE 20TH CENTURY: MAJOR EVENTS, TRENDS/MOVEMENTS, ISSUES,
PEOPLE, IDEAS
For the rest of the term we'll be
focusing on the 20th century. Your second essay
will use one person's life to focus on some of the major trends, issues, and
events of that century. These two virtual sessions will help to build the
context of those lives. Using the textbook, online notes (for Topics 11, 12,
13 ) with links to
various resources (like the
People's Century documentary series), and
documents from the source book you will choose and discuss some major
events, trends, issues, people, and ideas of the 20t century.
For the next two weeks, you will do
three postings here, one for the first third of the century (1900-1930s),
one for the second third (1940s-1970s); one for the last third (1970s to the
present). For each time segment choose:
1. The five events you believe are most important - and
explain your choices
2. The most important person - and explain your choice
3. The most important trend or movement [such as the rise of
totalitarianism or movement for civil rights] - and explain your choice
4. One primary source (a document from the sourcebook or from
online) that deals with the trend or movement and explain your choice in a
few short paragraphs.
Thus, by the last week of term you will have submitted
what in your view are the most important 15 events, 3 persons, 3 movements, and 3 sources.
Be sure to state clearly at the beginning of each posting what time segment you
are dealing with.
