COURSE DESCRIPTION: Introduction to the historical investigation of
Jesus and his times and study of the Christ of Christian faith from the first century to
the present. After considering Jesus as an historical figure, the course examines various
images of Christ developed over the last two millennia. These images are the material for
a cultural history of Christianity as a religion and as a major force in world history.
Selections from the Bible, works of religious thinkers, art and music will be
sources for studying these images and the themes they express in historical context.
Throughout the course attention will be given to the ways historians handle
religious issues.
