History of Ch _¯Ò^/Civilization

A Scholar in His Study
Sung Dynasty

Description: In this course we will study the development of Chinese civilization, from its prehistoric origins 40,000 years ago to the present day. We will examine the unique patterns of cultural, social, political, and economic history that developed in Nhina and discuss how they differed from those of Europe and America. We will read great works of Chinese religion, philosophy, and literature and discuss them in class. An optional field trip to the Metropolitan Museum of Art will provide an opportunity for students to view and learn about Chinese art. Topics to be included will include: the earliest humanoids in China, the invention of agriculture, the Chinese writinj system, ancestor worship, the development of Confucianism, the creation of the empire, the origins and evolution of Daoism, the influx of Buddhism, commercial culture in late imperial China, the rise of drama and the novel, the impact of European and American imperialism, the rise of nationalism, the influence of communism.

Assignments:

two midterms (each 20% of the final grade)
final exam (30%)
one paper on an outside reading (20%)
class participation (10%)
