Mr. Calandra,
My name is Christine Sciascia and I am a senior at Brooklyn College. For
the past year and a half I have acted on behalf of Professor Robert David
"KC" Johnson to ensure that he receive promotion and tenure at Brooklyn
College. When the Board of Trustees in accordance with Chancellor
Goldstein acted to grant Professor Johnson promotion and tenure the
students at Brooklyn College celebrated a victory for quality academics
within the CUNY system.
Sadly this debacle is not over. On March 13th an article appeared on the
website of Professor Erin O'Connor entitled "More Brooklyn College
Nonsense." The article talks about the formation of an integrity
committee on the campus of BC to investigate the actions of the Board of
Trustees of the City University of New York. Mr. Calandra, you are one
such member of the Board and I urge you to read the article (I have put
the link at the bottom of this email) and form an investigation of your
own. Brooklyn College officials apparently are not respecting the wishes
of the Board on their decision to grant promotion and tenure to Professor
Johnson. The formation of an "integrity" committee to investigate the
brave and commendable actions of the Board is a farce; the very people
that acted without a shred of integrity are investigating the only people
that had the courage to demonstrate integrity.
The Board of Trustees acted to ensure that the CUNY system would uphold
standards versus petty campus politics. I am proud to attend the CUNY
system and I have received a quality education. I want to ensure that
future CUNY students receive the same. I had the distinct pleasure of
meeting with Chancellor Goldstein on Tuesday, March 12, 2003. The
Chancellor wanted to meet the students that took part in KC Johnson's
tenure battle and the students wanted to thank him for making the correct
decision. I would also like to extend my sincere thanks you for your
brave and wise decision to grant tenure to Professor Johnson.
Thank you for taking the time to read this letter. Any correspondence can
be addressed to this e-mail address.
