Quizzes are given with advance notice one, two, or
three times per semester. They consist of between five and twenty-five
questions, totaling 100 points, and each may account for between five and
twenty-five percent of the course grade; most often, they consist of twenty
questions and count for ten percent of the grade. They include
short-answer questions of these types: multiple choice; fill in the blank;
true/false. They call for these kinds of knowledge: chronology (arrange three to
five items in chronological order); geography (identify cities, rivers, mountain
ranges, country names); identification (identify person, place or thing
characterized or name author of quoted material).
Makeup quizzes may be given only in the event of
life-threatening medical emergency (self, spouse, child) or death of close
family relative (spouse, child, sibling, parent). Where there are three
quizzes, the lowest grade may be dropped and the average of the two highest quiz
grades assigned for the quiz component of the grade.
If the instructor observes cheating, or can discover
evidence of cheating by the comparison of errors, a grade of F is given for the
quiz.
