COURSE REQUIREMENTS --
READINGS will be of two types--
FOR ALL WRITTEN WORK: Sign up for Blackboard -- Go to the CUNY PORTAL to sign up for Blackboard. Portal FAQ'S are here; Blackboard instructions here. When you have established a Blackboard identity (you only need to do that once, so if you have one already, you're OK), email the instructor to gain access to the course page. All papers will be submitted by the Digital Drop Box accessed in Blackboard. All announcements to the class will be made from Blackboard.
THREE analytical essays based on source readings -- 30% of grade. Due via Digital Drop Box by completion dates given in table below.
TERM PAPER: an analytical comparative book report -- 30% of grade Based on your reading of two books (or eight scholarly articles) approved by the instructor by week 5 of the semester. You may choose books listed in the course bibliography from two different historical periods or regions. Do NOT choose titles from sections labeled "general" or "sources." Due last day of class. If you wish to submit a draft first paragraph at least one week before then, I'd be glad to review it and advise on strengthening this essential component of your final paper. I will normally not permit rewriting a paper that has already received a grade.
FINAL exam -- 30% of grade Essay exam based on all material, including assigned readings and class presentations.
CLASS participation -- 10% of grade Includes attendance, attentiveness, oral presentations, and participation in class discussion. More than three absences (outside of medical or family emergencies, for which written evidence must be provided) will impact participation grade negatively. Three latenesses equal one absence.
Academic HONESTY -- All students are expected to comply with guidelines for academic honesty. |
