The Friends Steering Committee included alumni/ae Barbara Gerber, Alice Eisenberg, Jonathan Chanis, Ila Stanger, John Leach, and Trudy Stern (Chair). Many of the Committee's meetings were devoted to planning the fund-raising for the new building.

Membership in the Friends increased over the previous academic year. The 1998 premium for those who joined at the $250 or higher level was a handsome matte black letter opener bearing the Friends logo. On November 2, Chief Librarian Barbra Higginbotham held an afternoon party in her home for Friends who contributed $1,000 or more in 1996/1997. Mr. and Mrs. Fred Bass, Professor Barbara Gerber and her husband, Dr. Gertrude Stern, Mr. and Mrs. Jonathan Chanis, and Mr. and Mrs. Karl Eisenberg were included. Architect Ted Burtis was present to talk with the Friends about the Library Project and show them presentation boards.
 

Honoring a Special "Friend," Professor Barbara Gerber

At the Library's May 29 meeting of the professional staff we took the opportunity to thank and honor Barbara Gerber. Professor Gerber has done more for the Library, and cares more for us and our mission, than any other faculty member. We held a brunch and presented her with both a plaque and a citation.
