I. GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS
FOR USE OF CD-ROMS

  1. You will only be able to use the CD-ROM databases at the Brooklyn College Library. Other periodical indexing is available for remote users through access to CUNYPLUS. Click here to see the databases available through CUNYPLUS.

  2. Make sure that your search is appropriate for CD-ROM searching. One-subject searches and very general topics are sometimes more effectively searched through other sources. Ask a reference librarian if you need help selecting a source.

  3. Choose a CD-ROM specific to your subject.

  5. If you use the appropriate thesaurus for ERIC, PSYCLIT, and MEDLINE, your search will be easier to conduct and more relevant.

  6. Try to refine your search to fewer than 100 references before displaying or printing. Looking at huge sets is time-consuming and may cause the computers to freeze.

  7. Printing is limited to 50 citations in ERIC, GEOREF, MATHSCI, MEDLINE, MLA, PSYCLIT, and SPORTS DISCUS; to 100 citations in ACADEMIC INDEX; and to 10 pages in DISCLOSURE.

  8. Always reset the computer before beginning your search.
To reset ERIC, GEOREF, MATHSCI, MEDLINE, MLA, PSYCLIT, and SPORTS DISCUS press ESC and then Q.
To reset DISCLOSURE, press ESC repeatedly until you see the initial menu, highlight "Return to DOS" and hit enter.
  9. Check the printer frequently. If the printing becomes light or blurred ask at the reference desk for a new ink jet. In addition, the scrolling paper may become jammed. Ask for a librarian's assistance to unjam the paper.

II. STRATEGY FOR SEARCHING CD-ROMS

  1. Convert your topic into keywords or descriptors. Do not use complete sentences. For example, you want to research the effects of parental involvement on academic achievement. Break down your research topic into its major concepts: academic achievement and parental involvement. Ignore words such as results, influence, effect, etc.

  2. Look up your terms or phrases in the appropriate Thesaurus.

  3. Enter the terms separately.

  4. Combine the terms using and/or operators. And means you want both terms to be in each record you find. "Children and television" finds records that includes both topics. Or means you want either term to be in the records you find. "Teenagers or adolescents" finds records with one or the other of the two terms.
