Research Resources Dial-Up Instructions
In order to dial-up successfully into BC's service, Dial-up Networking must be set up properly:
- 1. In Windows 95/98, open My Computer
- 2. Open the Dial-up Networking folder.
(If there is no such folder, you will have to add Dial Up Networking. To do so, open the Control Panels, and go into Add/Remove Programs. Click on the Windows Setup tab, highlight Communications and click Details. Check Dial Up Networking on, and click OK. Follow any on-screen instructions. You will then have to restart your computer.)
- 3. Click on Make A New Connection.
- 4. Name the connection BC Exchange.
- 5. Click Next, and enter the phone number 718-951-4565.
- 6. Click Next, and then Finish.
- 7. Go to Control Panel.
- 8. In Control Panel, choose Network.
- 9. In the Configuration tab, Client for Microsoft Networks should be installed. If not, then install it - Choose Add, then choose Client. Choose Microsoft as the manufacturer, and then choose Client for Microsoft Networks. Hit OK.
- 10. In the Configuration tab, Dial-Up adapter should be installed. If not, then install it - Choose Add, then choose Adapter. Choose Microsoft as the manufacturer, and then choose Dial-Up adapter. Hit OK.
- 11. In the Configuration tab, TCP/IP should also be installed. If not, then install it - Choose Add, then choose Protocol. Choose Microsoft as the manufacturer, and then choose TCP/IP. Hit OK.
- 12. In the Configuration tab, highlight TCP/IP and choose Properties. Click on the DNS Configuration tab.
- 13. Make sure Enable DNS is selected.
- 14. In the Host field, enter your user name. In the Domain field, enter brooklyn.cuny.edu
- 15. Under DNS Server Search Order, input the numbers 146.245.100.158 and choose Add.
- 16. Under Domain Suffix Search Order, input brooklyn.cuny.edu and choose Add.
- 17. Choose OK, and follow the onscreen instructions to restart your computer.
- 18. Open My Computer and go into the Dial Up Networking folder. You should see an icon there for BC Exchange. Drag the icon to your desktop to make a shortcut there.
- 19. Click on the shortcut you just made and enter your username and password.
You can now click Connect, and your computer will Dial In. Once connected, you can use Exchange (OR WsFTP, etc.) the same way you do when on campus.
