What's New With DNEW?

By Beth Evans
Reference Librarian and Bibliographer

DNEW (Database-Newspapers) is an online CUNY+ file that provides citations and abstracts to articles published from 1989 forward in 27 United States newspapers. Professors Elizabeth Miller and Beth Evans offer Brooklyn College faculty and students online, full-text retrieval of articles cited from 12 of the newspapers that are not available in the Brooklyn College Library. These newspapers include the Atlanta Constitution, Boston Globe, and Chicago Tribune, as well as other regionally significant titles.

Readers can access DNEW from any of the Library's CUNY+ terminals, or via modem from home or office. Remote access requires the faculty member or student to key in his or her social security number, which serves as a CUNY ID.

Once readers identify the articles they want, requests can be placed at the Reference Desk, or e-mailed to Professor Beth Evans (betbc@cunyvm) or Professor Elizabeth Miller (bembc@cunyvm).
There are one or two caveats:

* The articles supplied include text, but not illustrations.
* Except in special cases, each reader is limited to two articles at a time on any given subject.
* For technical reasons, we are not always able to retrieve online the full text of every article. Faculty may then request the article through Research Services, on the Library's lower level.
*Readers may pick up their articles two days after submitting a request.
