Progress Report - February 2002


  • The project coordinator met with 40th district council member Yvette Clarke to alert her to the project's existence and goals, get her perspective and ideas for the project's direction, and invite her to join the project Advisory Committee

  •  
  • The project coordinator met with Dr. Kendal Stuart to introduce the project to him, elicit advice based on his years of interaction with the community, and to invite him to join the Advisory Committee

  •  
  • We introduced the project to Janet Green-director of the Labor Archives at NYU.  She was given an overview of the project's goals and offered many useful strategies for successfully conducting our preservation effort. 

  •  
  • Advisory Committee member Jim Dyer introduced the project to Dr. Kathleen Joyce Prestwidge former Chair of Biology at Hostos Community College and present television producer for Queens Public Access Television.  We discussed the ways in which we could use television to publicize the project.

  •  
  • The project was visited by Dr. Roiyah Saltus Blackwood of the CASBAH project in London, England.  We discussed the similarities between our two initiatives and methodologies and explored options for effectively managing preservation effort.

  •  
  • The project coordinator met with Paula Menzies-director of the Caribbean Literary and Cultural Center at the Flatbush branch of the New York Public Library.  They are presently exploring ways in which the two projects can work together.

  •  
  • We are pleased to announce two new additions to our advisory committee: The Honorable Yvette Clarke, and the Honorable Kendal Stuart.

  •  
  • We have begun a new survey this month and we continue to survey the papers of the Union of Jamaican Alumni Associations.

  •  
  • The project continues to contact and follow-up with the historically significant Jamaican Progressive League and Tobago Alumni Association.

  •  
  • Academic research about the Jamaican, Trinidadian & Tobagonian, and Pan-Caribbean community  continues so that the survey will accurately reflect the dynamics of the community.
