The Caribbean Collection:
An Archival Survey of the Records of the
Jamaican and Trinidadian Communities of Brooklyn

Progress Report - June 2002

  • The Project Coordinator was interviewed by Bryan Fleck, the assistant editor of Black Diaspora Magazine.  An article about the project will be featured in the magazine's July issue.

  •
  • A final Draft of the Work Plan was submitted to staff at METRO.

  • We have began to survey the papers of the St. Marks Episcopalian Church.  This Church, like Epiphany and St. Simon Episcopalian Episcopalian Church which is also a part of the survey, is led by a Caribbean rector.  The church is integrally involved in community development and even has stained glass with Harriet Tubman, Mary McLoud Bethune, Martin Luther King Jr., and Marcus Garvey.

  •
  • We continue to survey the papers of the Union of Jamaican Alumni Associations and the St. Peter Claver Roman Catholic Church.

  •
  • Jared Mcallister of the Daily News' Caribbeat Magazine agreed to do a story on the project.  Reporter Janet Hines has interviewed the Project Coordinator and various Advisory Committee Members and representatives from surveyed organizations.

  • In order to represent the project for the Caribbeat article, Brooklyn College provided a professional photographer, Roy Mittleman, to photograph project activities.  He accompanied the project staff on surveys and meetings throughout Brooklyn.  Some of the photographs will be featured in next month's issue of Caribbeat.

  •
  • We will be presenting a paper on the project at the next meeting of the Black Caucus of the American Library Association (BCALA).   Project staff is preparing the content of the presentation as well as making conference arrangements.

  • The project continues to contact and follow-up with the historically significant Jamaican Progressive League and Tobago Alumni Association.

  • Our next Advisory Committee Meeting has been set for July 18, 2002.  The Project Assistant is making all necessary preparations for the meeting.

  •
  • Academic research about the Jamaican, Trinidadian & Tobagonian, and Pan-Caribbean community continues so that the survey will accurately reflect the dynamics of the community.
