The Colon :

CHEF'S NOTES: Don't be fooled! This dish looks alot like its cousin the semi-colon, but they're definitely NOT interchangeable.  
  
  • Introduces lists and quotations
The items in the costume rack are as follows: one black hat, a floral dress, gray canvass pants, a white blouse, and a red tie.  
The protesting students cried for justice: "We will no longer sit by while our scholastic opportunities are being eliminated one by one!"  

 

CHEF'S NOTES: An independent clause precedes the quote.    

  • For formal address: When addressing a formal letter, place a colon after the person being addressed:

  • Title and Subtitle: A colon separates a book title from its subtitle
