AUXILIARY VERBS

AVERE - ESSERE
 [To Have - To Be]

GRAMMATICAL POINT
AVERE and ESSERE are called AUXILIARY VERBS in that they "help" with the formation compound tenses. More precisely, AVERE is used with TRANSITIVE VERBS,  ESSERE is used with INTRANSITIVE VERBS.

FORMATION OF COMPOUND TENSES

Compound Tenses are formed by the conjugated forms of the Auxiliary Verbs Essere or Avere plus the past participle of the verb.

It is therefore only logical that AVERE will take AVERE as its auxiliary, while ESSEREwill take ESSERE.
