Spegazione
saluti formali informali CIAO is used among friends both to say HI and BYE. It is informal. Rule of thumb, use it with people you are on a first-name basis with. ARRIVEDERCI means more or less SEE YOU LATER, but more formal. Friends would say "CI VEDIAMO" ("we'll see each other.") BUONGIORNO BUONASERA are common among people showing respect and a bit of distance. BUONANOTTE is for everyone: for children and parents, among friends, formal. |

FONETICA SPIEGAZIONE FONETICA / PHONETICS The Alphabet, Spelling and Phonetic Conventions. Italian is a highly phonetic language. This means that each sound is (almost) always graphically represented by the same combination of letters (vowels and/or consonants.) Compare that with English where, as Bernard Shaw once famously said, the word "fish" could be written "ghoti": F as in enough; I as in women; SH as in the ending -tion.
