ASSIGNMENT 1
(LECTURE 1)

DEADLINE JUNE  8 (11.59PM)

I received several emails with a missing or incomplete screen name. Change your screen name to show FIRST AND LAST NAME and nothing else.

If you don't know what an email screen name is, or how to change it, check google or youtube (I can't believe I have to tell you.)

Compose a WORD document formatted in  .doc  or   .docx  or  .rtf   Instructions and tutorials on google and youtube.

FILE NAME:   last-name.june8  [.doc  or   .docx  or  .rtf]    ONLY AND EXCLUSIVELY THIS INFORMATION

Attach to an email message. EMAIL SUBJECT:    ASSIGNMENT JUNE 8   (don't misspell "assignment")

In the message body indicate the TOTAL amount of time it took to SCREEN all the videos. If you did it in multiple sessions, keep track of time.

TASK 1: SCREEN VIDEOS   1, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8,

For each of these videos, take notes, in bullet form. Your notes may be just to help you remember, or to underline a particularly significant detail, something that struck you for whatever reason: maybe the message, maybe the symbology, maybe the filming technique. You can also jot down your personal observations and reflections.

TASK 2:  screen THE BLACK HAND

What are the overt ITALIAN cues in the video, the details that the audience of those times (primarily non-Italian) would easily identify, OR, would learn to identify from this video. Make an effort to put yourself in the shoes of the contemporary audience for whom going to the movies was a real big deal and an extraordinary experience. How easy was it to be manipulated? How easy is it today to be manipulated by the media?

INSTRUCTIONS: talk about the things that matter to you. Do not tell me things I already know. I am interested in your ORIGINAL and GENUINE reactions. Students often think they have to write what the professors "wants to hear."
I don't know what I want to hear, but I know I want to hear your genuine voices, your self reflections, your observations, your new thoughts or insights or intuitions. I don't want to get bored to tears reading the plot of the shorts: I know it by heart. But I know nothing about how and what you think. That's what interests me. And, I hope, it interests you too.

[As to the issue of how much you should write, I leave it up to you. Write only up to the point where you feel it's genuine and true. When you begin to slip into rhetoric and repetition, it's time either to quit, or to press harder and try to go deeper to find other layers of meaning and reach a deeper point of self-understanding.

TASK 3:  screen SKYSCRAPERS OF NEW YORK

Bullets notes with a summary of the plot.

QUESTIONS: What are the common traits attributed to Italians in Black Hand and Skyscrapers

TASK 4:  What are the dominants traits attributed to Italians in the cartoons? What is the "narrative" about them?
