FROM SON OF ITALY TO CHRIST IN CONCRETE - THE EVOLUTION OF THE IMMIGRANT

Summarize typology of immigrant:

1) at the lowest level, Son of Italy -- doesn't emigrate to pursue a dream, he runs away from a nightmare.

2) The Italian. Urban, ready to be integrated, fighting to overcome the 'savage' hidden inside
Iconography of Italy and Italians in Italy. Americanization. Similarity with SON: dropping to the lowest point and re-emerging transformed (alienation as the inevitable price?)

3) L'emigrante. America viewed from left-leaning, semi-anti-American, Italian culture. The topos of the 'anarchist'. Representation of Americans. Picaresque narrative. Crime as the only way out of poverty.

4) Christ in Concrete. Son of Italy becomes a bricklayer, marries, has children and dies.
