LECTURE 12

MARCH 26
  • Before you complain about the amount of work consider that this is in lieu of 3 hours of class, plus home assignments.

  • It is extremely important (for my mental health) that you follow all my instruction scrupulously. Check the spelling of you email subject, use the correct filename etc. I will take off points for sloppy spelling and punctuation in your written work. This also applies to blog comments.
BLOG as usual
VIOLENCE BY ITALIANS and AGAINST ITALIANS

READING

  1. Anti-Italianism

    Questions:
    A. The writer lists a series of "reasons" why an anti-Italian sentiment grew in the U.S. Which reasons are patently bogus, based on pure fantasy, and which ones are "reactions" to perceived threats brought by Italians?

    B. Who is Margaret Sanger and how does the article connect her to Italians? Is there anything disturbing about it?

  2. SIX ITALIANS

    Questions:
    A. What crime were they found guilty of?

    B. Where did the live in America. Mention the precise location/neighborhood.

  3. WALL STREET

    Questions:
    A. What is your reaction to this use of violence for political reasons?

    B. What kind of measures is the state allowed to use to curb this kind of violence? Dragnets? Deportation? Preventive detention? Unwarranted surveillance? What else?

    C. Is this kind of violence a legitimate price to pay if we want to be "free" of state surveillance and other security measures that limit freedom?

(I use the term STATE instead of the more common GOVERNMENT. Government is one of the institutions of a state. In the U.S. the word 'government' is used instead of "state" in order to avoid confusion with the "states" that constitute the Union.)

  4. GIOVANNITTI

    Questions:
    A. What were the ideals that the members of the jury shared with Giovannitti?

    B. What are the DIFFERENCES between Giovannitti's closing argument and Vanzetti's self defense during his trial?

SCREENING

BREAD AND ROSES

Questions:
A. How much do you know about the history of the labor union movement in America?

B. The labor movement is barely mentioned in school books. Is it a "cover up" or the legitimate goal to avoid focusing on internal conflicts (race, class, gender) in the country?
