Keep your focus on the IDEOLOGY, how the Mafiosi justify their own existence and the nature of their business. There is an element of truth in the claim that they were shunned and marginalized from "honest" pursuits in business, government, academia etc. and that the only sector open to their skills and ability was criminality.
That doesn't make them moral or innocent.

(An old joke says that the only difference between a Mafioso and a regular business person is that the Mafiosi are more impatient.)

(And one more joke, academically oriented:
What do you get when you cross a Mafioso and a deconstructionist?
You get an offer you can't understand.)

1) FIND in the pages of  The Godfather  at least one passage when this ideology is expressed; or a quotation that reveals how they see themselves. What do we learn from this particular quotation.

Recommended   Here is a series of short lectures I recorded on a number of topics about The Godfather.
